Dogs Teach Us Leadership Through Presence

https://www.podbean.com/media/share/pb-zdgwy-199b3d5
In this powerful episode of Elevated Conversations, Joanna Lynn explores how dogs reveal one of the most transformative truths about leadership — that real influence begins with presence.

Through moving stories of a veteran’s healing, a child’s breakthrough, and a CEO’s rediscovery of calm, Joanna shares how the simple presence of dogs can teach us to lead with empathy, steadiness, and trust.

Blending neuroscience, heart, and faith, this episode will inspire you to pause, breathe, and reimagine leadership as something sacred — not about control, but connection.

Because when we elevate others through presence, we rise too.

Trust the Still Small Voice

A note that says it was all worth it

I want to share a true story about following an inner nudge and trusting God to guide me. I noticed that a colleague had left everything at their desk, including high value items like a watch and an iPad, and when I called them their voice carried a tone of lost hope I had never in all my years in human resources made a call for a wellness check before, but this time I listened to that quiet prompting and called the police The officer later told me I had saved his life He was only minutes from taking his life Now he is thriving and serving in a high power position

My message is simple and urgent Be still and listen God speaks through that still small voice inside of us When something feels off do not be afraid to follow that instinct You do not need to have all the answers to act Sometimes a call, a message, or staying with someone for a few minutes is the life raft they need

During Suicide Awareness Month my intention is to shine a light on the people who look normal on the outside but are drowning on the inside To anyone who feels there is no hope hear this there is always hope You can be the light for someone today

If you or someone is in immediate danger call 911 In the United States you can also reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for support You do not have to carry this alone

This person was so grateful that they later sent me flowers with a heartfelt note, a reminder that even the smallest act of obedience to God’s prompting can change the entire course of a life. I will always cherish that gift, not because of the flowers themselves, but because it symbolizes hope restored and a life redeemed.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10

Why Mexico’s Food Warning Labels Are a Brilliant Move We Should Consider in the U.S.

Example of Mexico’s Warning System

I recently came across a Coca-Cola bottle from Mexico, and what I noticed on the label was incredibly impressive. Mexico has adopted a clear and bold warning system on food and beverage packaging to help consumers make better health decisions—and honestly, it’s something the United States could truly benefit from.

Right on the front of the bottle were two black octagonal labels:

Exceso Calorías (Excess Calories) Exceso Azúcares (Excess Sugars)

There’s no fine print or hidden disclosures—just straightforward warnings that are hard to miss. Even the bottle cap had a printed notice stating “2 Sellos” (2 Seals) along with “Contiene cafeína. Evitar en niños” (Contains caffeine. Avoid in children).

These labels are part of Mexico’s national regulation known as NOM-051, which was implemented to combat the country’s rising obesity and diabetes rates. Products that exceed set thresholds for sugar, saturated fat, sodium, calories, or caffeine must carry these visible warnings. It’s not just about awareness. It’s about transparency and public health.

As someone who cares about wellness, health, and informed decision-making, I find this system inspiring. In the U.S., we rely heavily on nutrition facts panels and ingredient lists, which are often overlooked or misunderstood. Mexico’s system makes it simple: if it’s excessive in something harmful, the label tells you clearly and directly.

Imagine if more countries, especially the U.S., adopted this approach. We could shift the way people view processed foods, encourage healthier choices, and potentially reduce long-term health issues caused by poor nutrition.

This is more than a label, it’s leadership in public health. Let’s hope we follow their example.

Imagine Having a Millionaire’s Team at Your Fingertips—for a Fraction of the Cost

What If You Had Access to a Personal Assistant for Every Area of Your Life—Without Paying a Fortune?

LESS STRESS=WELLNESS

LESS TIME in TASKS=MORE TIME WORKING OUT AND MEAL PREP

If you had all the money in the world, you’d probably hire a personal assistant, executive coach, researcher, planner, writer, shopper, and concierge—right?

What if I told you… you already can.

Not just one person, but one system.

And it’s called ChatGPT.

Let me show you what it can do—and what it’s already doing for me and my team.

  • Reads and summarizes long emails or documents
  • Writes professional responses based on your tone, message, and intent

  • Builds polished PowerPoint slide decks, training materials, SOPs, or proposals
  • Turns your answers or ideas into formatted documents or Excel spreadsheets Acts as a virtual Chief of Staff—organizing your thoughts and helping you lead with clarity

Here’s a recent example of how I used it:

Before going on leave for an extended period, I uploaded all the emails my boss had sent me over the past 30 days—along with all my responses—and asked ChatGPT to reconcile them. It quickly identified any gaps and flagged anything I might’ve missed.

In another case, I uploaded a PowerPoint presentation from our legal team along with our employment manual and asked it to rewrite the content using culturally aligned, people-first language. Both tasks took no more than 60 to 90 seconds.

🧩 The Real Power? Efficiency + Intelligence

  • In just three months, my team and I completed over a year’s worth of work by using ChatGPT well.
  • Not because it replaces us—but because it amplifies us.
  • Whether it’s business, travel, health, or personal growth—I use it daily.
  • I cross-check critical information, but I lean on its ability to help me organize, express, and act faster.

👏 Stop hiding it. Start using it—with intention.

  • I’ve seen posts saying “don’t let people know you’re using AI.”
  • But here’s the thing: this is a once-in-a-thousand-year moment.
  • If you’re not learning how to use it now, you are falling behind.
  • From an HR perspective—and I say this with 27+ years in the field
  • I believe that soon, AI literacy will be required
  • Not optional. Just like Excel, email, or Word once were

Instead of hiding it, teach others. Help your team save hours. Help your company save money. Stop overworking and overspending when you can get the same (or better) results smarter.

There are free and paid versions, and the value is enormous even at the $20/month level. You don’t need to use it to cheat—you use it to think, plan, and perform at a higher level.

I wrote this entire post using ChatGPT—just by feeding it my raw ideas.

It helped me shape them, organize them, and deliver them clearly.

That’s not cheating. That’s leadership. That’s efficiency. And that’s the future.

Stay locked in!

LockedIn to Yahweh

I’ve walked through seasons where I felt broken in body and spirit. Surgery, recovery, discomfort, surrender—those were real. I’ve stood on platforms as a leader, helping others rise while silently asking God to hold me steady. I’ve carried the weight of responsibility, of motherhood, of expectations, and still said yes to becoming stronger in my 50s, so I could stand in wholeness before the One who sees it all.

And now? I’m not casually connected to God.

I’m locked in to Yahweh.

This is personal. This is powerful. This is holy.

I’ve traded fear for faith.

Pressure for peace.

Perfection for presence.

My workouts are worship. My discipline is devotion.

My leadership is submission.

Everything I build, whether in my body, my home, my career, or my heart, is grounded in Him.

Because I know what it’s like to try and do it alone.

And I’ll never go back.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” — Isaiah 26:3

That’s me.

My mind is steadfast.

My spirit is steady.

I trust Him.

I’m locked in to Yahweh.

Not just in the mountaintop moments, but in the middle of the stretch, the strain, and the slow progress.

Because He has always been locked in to me through every chapter..

I’m showing up.

For myself. For the calling.

For His glory.

And I’m bringing others with me.

Let’s move. Let’s rise. Let’s grow.

All for the One who never let go.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” — Isaiah 26:3

As I’ve been living out this “locked in” mindset, I’ve started noticing it everywhere. In the way I move, the way I lead, and even in the things that catch my attention. Recently, something unexpected stopped me in my tracks and brought this whole message full circle in a powerful and visual way.

“Locked In” by Kyle Moon, Wildlife Photographer

When I saw the professional wildlife photo titled “Locked In” by wildlife photographer, Kyle Moon. Locked In to Yahweh, something in my spirit immediately said, “That’s the one.” I didn’t hesitate to purchase it because I believe in supporting the kind of work that flows from someone’s God-given passion. We are stronger when we lift each other up, when we recognize the spark in someone else and choose to fan the flame. That’s part of my calling: to elevate others, to create space for people to rise in their purpose, and to lead with a heart rooted in God. That’s why I’m here, on this earth.

So when I saw that photo, I saw alignment. One creative soul locked in with his calling, and another, me, locked in with mine!

When Music Guides the Pen: How I Worship Through Words

Worship in motion. This is how I honor Him, one word at a time.

Everyone has seen the image of the painter, his hand steady, his brush flowing with color, while an unseen hand above guides him. It’s a powerful picture of divine inspiration, of creativity being something more than skill, something sacred.

For me, that image isn’t holding a brush. It’s typing at a keyboard or holding a pen, surrounded by music that moves something deep inside of me.

When the melody rises, so do my thoughts. When the rhythm shifts, so does the flow of my words. My worship doesn’t look like a raised hand or a microphone. It looks like a blank page slowly filling with truth, testimony, and the quiet whisper of God’s presence.

Writing is how I process what God is doing in and around me. It’s how I respond when I feel His nearness, or even when I feel the silence. Some people dance. Some paint. Some sing. I write.

Music doesn’t just fill the background. It becomes the atmosphere where my soul gets honest. It reminds me of who God is and who I am because of Him. It sparks memory, insight, longing. It calls out the parts of my story I didn’t even know needed telling.

When I write while worship music plays, I’m not multitasking. I’m surrendering.

I’m offering my gift back to the Giver.

I’m saying, “Here’s what You’ve done in me. Let me tell it.”

It’s not about being eloquent. It’s about being available.

This is the artistic part of me that not everyone sees, the quiet place where God meets me at the intersection of rhythm and revelation. Where the music lifts my spirit and the words pour out like prayer.

It’s my altar. It’s my worship.

And it’s one of the most honest ways I know how to honor Him.

All for His glory, always.

Why Care at 50?

Why I Care About Health in My (near) 50s

Here is a sobering fact. Everyone in my immediate family on both my mother’s and father’s side passed away before the age of 60. Not because of hereditary disease but because of poor habits and preventable health issues. What makes that even harder to swallow is that the generation before them lived well into their hundreds.

They were farmers. They moved their bodies every day, worked with their hands, and ate real food. They lived simply, but they lived long.

Another part of that legacy lives on in a place called the Red House in West Virginia. The Underwood family name runs deep there. We still have old photos that show how healthy and vibrant they were. You can see the strength in their posture and the pride in how they carried themselves. That history reminds me that longevity is possible, but it takes intention.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own.”

1 Corinthians 6:19

Now that I am in my 50s, I do not take health for granted. I have had surgeries, experienced unexpected setbacks, and been forced to slow down more times than I would like to admit. But through all of it, one thing has become clear. My health is not just physical. It is emotional. It is spiritual. And it deserves my full attention.

My Best with Intentional Living

I work out because I want to live. Not just survive, not just get by, but actually live. I want to feel strong and confident. I want to walk through life with energy and peace in my body. I want to be able to lift my future grandbabies, travel without limits, and move freely. I do not want to repeat the same pattern I saw in my family, and I know that choosing differently now makes a difference later.

“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”

Proverbs 31:25

For me, health is a form of stewardship. God gave me this body. It has been stretched, rebuilt, cut open, and healed. But it still shows up for me. And I want to show up for it. That means eating well, moving regularly, getting sleep, and learning when to push and when to rest. It means showing discipline even when no one is watching, because it is not about a number on the scale. It is about honoring what I have been given.

When I care for my health, I am better in every role I hold. Daughter of God, Wife, Mother, leader, friend, and Aunt. I think more clearly, lead with more strength, and love with more capacity. I have also learned that taking care of myself is not selfish. It is preparation. For the long days, the hard conversations, the unexpected news, and the people who need me.

This picture was taken at the height of my unwellness. I knew something had to change, but I didn’t know where to begin. So I started with what I could do—research. I read blogs like this one, drawn in by the stories of others who had been where I was. Their honesty and progress gave me the push I needed to begin my own.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Colossians 3:23

Health is about building a future. I am not interested in quick fixes. I am interested in longevity, in strength, in peace. And if I have to be the one to break the generational cycle, I will. That is why my journey took five years, and if I was able to do it, anyone can choose a similar path for themselves.

When you are not healthy, you really only have one problem because without your health, everything else takes a back seat. But when you are healthy, you have a hundred problems and the strength to face them all. That is a gift. Embrace it, protect it, and do not take it for granted.

This chapter of life is about ownership. It is about grit, grace, and refusing to settle. One workout, one habit, one prayer at a time.

Well and Joyful

Dedicated to the Ones Who Came Before Me

If they had known better, I believe with all my heart they would have chosen differentlyand they would still be here with us today.

This post is lovingly dedicated to the family members whose lives shaped my own my father, Bruce Underwood, and my grandparents Dudley and Elaine Underwood, and Frank and Joyce Abbey. To my Aunt Susan Brewer, Uncle Frank Abbey Junior, and Aunt Shawna Abbey. To my father-in-law, Adolfo Hernandez, and my brother-in-law, Daniel Hernandez. Each of you, in your own way, left a mark on this world and on my heart. Though your time here was shorter than it should have been, your stories, your laughter, and your presence live on in me. This journey toward health and longevity is one I walk with your memory close. I carry the lessons, the legacy, and the love forward—one day, one choice, one step at a time.

Living for the Legacy: A Journey Toward True Wellness

Living for the Legacy: A Journey Toward True Wellness

We weren’t created just to get through life. We were made to live it with intention. Each day is a chance to build something bigger than ourselves, to pour into the people around us, and to shape a future that outlives us. When we live with purpose, we stop chasing temporary comfort and start investing in lasting impact. Our choices today become the foundation our children and their children will stand on.

Living for something greater than ourselves doesn’t just change our lives. It changes generations.

My father’s life and ultimately his death changed everything for me. He died as a result of health issues that built up over years of poor habits, choices, and stress, leading him to take his own life when he gave up. His left this earth when I was only 3 years old, and with that, I lost a father, a teacher, a protector. I carry that grief with me every day, but it’s not just grief. It’s fuel.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you…? Therefore honor God with your bodies.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

It wasn’t just my father who passed away during my youth. My grandfather didn’t live long enough to see the legacy he helped start grow. Most of my aunts, my uncle, and even my grandmother passed too soon, nearly all due to health-related issues (mental and physical). I often wonder what it would be like to call them up for advice, to hear their laughter, to soak up their stories, for them to be in the life of my children.

I wish the generations before me had known what I’m learning now. But their absence has become my awakening. They lived to survive. They didn’t live for the future because they didn’t know how much their daily choices could shape it. Good health wasn’t a priority. Good health wasn’t something they were taught to value or had the resources to fully understand. Their legacies were cut short not because they didn’t love us, but because they didn’t know how deeply their lifestyle would impact their destiny. And in many ways, that shortened the legacy they could have left behind.

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28

For over half of my life I wasn’t living healthy either. I didn’t know how. I didn’t understand the cost. I carried stress, ignored my body, and put everyone else first until one day I realized I was heading down the same road.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” – John 10:10

I had to make a choice. Not just to eat better or move more, but to change how I live completely. Wellness to me isn’t just nutrition or fitness. It’s mental, emotional, spiritual. It’s a daily practice of honoring the life God gave me.

What finally shifted everything? The next generation. I want to be here, not just physically, but fully. I want to live long and strong, to inspire, guide, and walk with the children we brought into this world. To break the cycle. To role model for them and their children how to live well from head to toe. I’m working to change the trajectory, not just for me but for them and for the generations that come after them.

“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” – Proverbs 22:6

I wish the generations before me had known what I’m learning now. But their absence has become my awakening. God has carried me through this transformation, giving me not only strength but a fire, a calling to live with purpose. To take care of this body, this mind, this heart. And to help others do the same, especially my children.

My story is still being written. But it’s already different than the ones before me, and that’s the legacy I pray to pass down.

“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.” Maya Angelou

Another helpful idea is to set up a Meal Train (name of App) where friends and family can sign up to deliver meals, send donations, or contribute gift cards so you can order food when needed. This is especially helpful during the first few days when you may not feel up to even microwaving something, and your loved ones are so focused on caring for you that it takes some pressure off of them too. You can also request meals from more than one person per day to help feed both you and the people supporting your recovery.
